TERMINOLOGY

Vermicompost

Vermicompost is WORM castings, WORM poo, organic WORM casting fertilizer. Vermicompost is widely used as an organic fertilizer, and as a soil conditioner and potting mix.

Vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is the farming technique of manufacturing Vermicompost using WORMS to assist in the composting process. The is the most natural, up to date, environmentally friendly method of producing organic fertilizer. Worms recycle all types of organic waste into a complete and balanced plant food, converting garbage into vermicompost.

Vermicomposting is the process of using composting WORMS and micro-organisms to turn organic waste into a black, sweet-smelling, nutrient-rich vermicompost.

Vermiculture

Vermiculture is the art of breeding, raising, selling WORMS and also manufacturing marketing of Vermicompost and WORM related products. Vermiculture is more commonly known as WORM FARMING.

Vermiculturist

A Vermiculturist is TheWormMan® or a person who farms, breeds and cares for WORMS. A professional WORM farmer is called Vermiculturist

Q1. What type of worms do you sell?

A1.  TheWormMan® sells the Red-composting worm, a similar worm to the Tiger-Composting worm, although  this Red composting worm is a different breed within the Tiger Worm species.

The Red composting Worm is a top dwelling composting worm, not a soil dwelling worm or a native soil worm. This red worm is the very best composting worm, proven over twenty years of full time breeding and TheWormMan® has developed a thorough set of breeding instructions in an online 'How to Do Manual', that you get free when  you purchase any composting system or worm package from TheWormMan®.

The Red Composting worm breeds very prolifically, mainly staying on the very top surface area of your compost heap or bin.

There are many thousands of breeds of worms worldwide, and all worms are good. There is no such thing as a bad worm, however the Red Composting worm is the most proven and consistent breeder and the most commercially bred worm in the world, TheWormMan® has kept the same genetically bred Red Worm for over twenty years, and we have what we believe to be the highest quality and breed of red composting worms anywhere in the world. We still have a small mixture of some Tigers and Blues within our worm stock, but the percentage of mixed worms is very low.

What is wrong with Tigers and the Blue worms?

There is nothing wrong with any breed of worm but all breeds differ in breeding and eating patterns, For example, Tiger worms do not breed as prolifically as the Reds, and the Tigers also like colder conditions and prefer not spend as much time in the very top surface area.

The Blue worm is a very hot tropical worm that breeds very prolifically but it also has a shorter life span. It is very hard to breed in consistent volumes all year long because of its breeding patterns and consequently it’s numbers tend to fluctuates greatly.

The most consistent and valuable worm that you will ever use is the red composting worm

Q2. How can I breed worms?

A2.  Worms are very easy to breed, you simply need to water them and feed them with the correct amounts of organic material. However, there is a real art and special technique in creating a consistent quality volume for commercial reasons, and it takes a lot of experience to generate hundreds of kilos of worms on a daily or weekly basis.

TheWormMan® is a world leader in commercial and domestic composting solutions and when you purchase worms from TheWormMan® you receive online, your own step-by-step worm breeding instructions and operating manuals.

TheWormMan® also provides a toll free help line for clients which has been in operation in Australia for over 20 years.

Q3. I got worms now; can I now purchase your breeding instructions?

A3. Over the last twenty years TheWormMan® received thousands of enquires regarding people needing help with worms, or requesting information about their worm composting systems, so please understand that if you do not purchase worms directly from TheWormMan® then we are not responsible for those worms.

If you would like access to our manuals then you need to purchase our minimal Worm Starter Kit, regardless of the type and breed of worm you may have. Once you have purchased your worms from TheWormMan® you will also receive his tried and proven instructions for managing your worms.

You will then be able to produce beautiful free organic fertiliser and liquid fertilizer year after year while reducing large volumes of green waste in an environmentally friendly way. In fact TheWormMan® is so confident of his systems that he will also give you a free lifetime guarantee to replace your  worms, if for ANY reason they die.

Q4. Do you purchase worms or castings?

A4.  No, we do not. Our business is to sell worms and castings, not to buy them.

TheWormMan® does however offer Joint Venture Casting Agreements both locally and internationally and under this Joint Venture Casting agreement,  TheWormMan® will often commit to purchasing castings from his clients.

The only worm farmers that TheWormMan® will purchase from are those who have entered into Joint Venture Agreements with quality assurance guarantees. Apart from this we do not buy from any other farmers, because there is no quality control in place and most of the worm stocks are mixed breeds.

Q 5. What size worm compost bin do I need?

A5.  TheWormMan® can tailor any worm compost system to suit any individual needs; whether you be a very large family, or a family with dog’s and cat’s, or a couple living in small flat, or single person living by yourself, there will always be a composting system for you.

One of our biggest sellers is our worm starter kit. This starter kit is the actual worms themselves, without any bin. They come in a calico bag in a box with instructions and are posted or sent by courier. You do not necessarily need a bin or a box to have a worm compost system, you can simply throw the worms into any pile of organic waste (like grass cuttings, leaf mulch etc.) and by following the instructions, you will have guaranteed success.

Another household favorite is the Worm Factory which is a three-tear plastic compost system. This is a great unit for one or two people, who don’t have a lot of regular food scraps. One of the really good features of the Worm Factory is that it has a little tap at the bottom so that you can easily create your own liquid worm castings for use as a liquid fertiliser.

Our most recommended and biggest seller is the Bottom-Door Plastic Bin which holds over 200 litres of organic waste and can handle the scraps from a large family. It has sliding access doors at the bottom and can also handle you dog poo and cat poo.

The simple principle is, the more surface area you have for the worms, then the greater the volume of waste that can be processed. Many large families actually have two or three bins and by doing so can take care of ALL there organic household waste (including cardboard, paper, vegetable oils, meat scraps, pet poo, grass cuttings and leaf material etc.)

Q 6. We have a restaurant, what worm composting system is best for us?

A6.  It all depends on the volume of waste material, and the surface area that is available to create either an open worm farm system or a series of enclosed composting bins. The enclosed bin system often looks better and can provide better protection from rodents, birds and cats etc, but nevertheless an open system can still be made secure and can sometimes produce a better result than the enclosed bins.

TheWormMan’s® systems are flexible and can be tailored to suit any requirements. For example if the initial set up cost of worms too great,  a lesser volume of worms can be used to seed the project and the system can be started composting only ten or twenty percent of the waste, until the biomass of worms builds up sufficiently to handle the full waste stream.

TheWormMan® has the experience and the biomass of worms to effectively convert any organic waste stream into high grade organic worm castings.

Q7. Can I give dog and cat poo to my worms?

A7. The answer to this is yes. That is if you purchase your worms from TheWormMan®.

We say this because a lot of people have purchased the wrong breeds of worms and do not have the correct information for processing dog and cat poo and this can result in serious problems. The result of using incorrect worm composting systems to dispose of cat and dog poo can be bad odours and dangerous levels of disease pathogens resident in the composted material. There can also be uneaten dog poo in the end product and this may even still have dog worms in it. This can cause serious problems to dogs, humans and even to the garden itself.

However, all these problems can be avoided if the correct procedures are followed. In fact worms love dog and cat poo as dog poo, which is very high in protein and it is a good solid food source for worms.

TheWormMan® composting systems are ideal for composting large amounts of dog and cat poo, especially in large breeding kennels and catteries. This useless smelly by product can be turned into wonderful soil conditioner and fertiliser.

TheWormMan® does however recommend caution when composting cat or dog poo and some conditions do apply.  For example, don’t feed your vegetable garden with composted cat or dog poo because of the possibility of pathogens, and make sure you wash your hands after you’ve been handling composted poo. It is also better to take the precaution and bury the castings under the topsoil if your dogs and cats are going to be running in the same yard.

Q10. Can I feed worms to my fish, birds and pet lizard?

A10. Worms are a perfect and ideal natural live food for these animals and more. Because worms are live and fresh you cannot overfeed most animals. Worms are full of protein, with high levels of EFA oils and they are an excellent supplement in any animal's diet.

Like any new food that you feed your animals, test different volumes and different mixtures to start with. Take it easy in the beginning and slowly introduce worms to your pets diet.

Some customers prefer to purchase our standard worm starter kit (a calico bag containing a guaranteed minimum 1,000 worms) and then use the worms for bait. If you do this, let us know that you want to use the worms for bait and we will make sure that you only get the “larger bait worms”

Attention tackle and fish bait shops. TheWormMan® has been successfully selling to tackle shops for over a decade. TheWormMan® has a replacement service for unsold packets and offers fast and efficient service in delivery. Quality and consistency is guaranteed.

Q12. Can I purchase worms for my garden?

A12.  The only worm we sell is the Red-composting worm. This composting worm is not suitable for the harsh conditions of the standard garden; if your garden has no mulch and is dry then the red-composting worms will most probably die.

This red composting worm is ideal to place into your composting bin or composting system, but not to place directly into your garden. However if you have got a very heavily mulched and well looked after garden then the composting worms will live in and benefit your garden greatly.

Instead of purchasing worms for your garden you need to purchase worm castings. It is complete with all the minerals and elements that your garden needs, plus there are always worms and eggs within TheWormMan® worm castings. These worm castings act as a slow release organic fertiliser and increase the micro activity which in turn releases the minerals and elements locked in the gardens existing organic material.

By heavy mulching and using castings to activate your soil, you will find that the wild, native worms will start coming back in your garden.
